At the Tino Pai Podcast, we are passionate about sharing kōrero (conversations) that inspire and uplift. Our upcoming episode is no exception. This Friday, we’re excited to bring you an incredible story of resilience and identity, as we sit down with Lee, a colleague and friend who has bravely navigated the ups and downs of life while staying true to his mana (strength, dignity).

Growing Up and Being Different

Lee grew up in the UK, and from a young age, he knew he was different. As a tamariki (child), he faced relentless patu wairua (emotional bullying) for not fitting in. It’s an experience that many can relate to—feeling whakamā (shame) for simply being yourself. Lee shares what it was like growing up in a world that didn’t accept him for who he was and how those challenges shaped his kaha (strength) and resilience.

Coming Out as a Gay Man

One of the most powerful parts of Lee’s journey is his coming out as a takatāpui (gay man). Despite the fear and uncertainty that often comes with embracing your true identity, Lee chose to live his pono (truth). In this episode, he reflects on the trials and triumphs of coming out and how it impacted his whānau (family) and relationships. His story is a testament to the importance of aroha (love) and whanaungatanga (connection) in living authentically.

ADHD Diagnosis Later in Life

Later in life, Lee received a diagnosis of ADHD, something that brought clarity to many aspects of his past. For Lee, understanding his hinengaro (mind) in this new way was like a puzzle piece falling into place. He shares with us how this diagnosis has influenced his life and how he’s learned to navigate the world with renewed māramatanga (understanding) of who he is.

A Story of Resilience

Lee’s kōrero is a reminder that, through all of life’s challenges, we can find our own manaakitanga (inner strength and support). His experiences with bullying, coming out, and navigating ADHD highlight the importance of embracing your ake (true self) and moving forward with kaha (strength) and hope, despite what others may say.

Tune In and Find Support

We are proud to share Lee’s story with you on Rāmere (Friday), 11th October 2024. If you or someone you know is facing similar challenges, we encourage you to whakarongo (listen) and tautoko (support) each other. Whether it’s bullying, coming out, or ADHD, there are resources and support available. You are not alone.

In the episode notes, you’ll find valuable links to resources for those seeking awhina (help) with bullying, takatāpui issues, and ADHD. We hope this kōrero will offer inspiration, comfort, and whanaungatanga for those in need. Kia kaha—stay strong, and remember, you are never alone on your journey to self-acceptance.
